What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a developmental neurological condition that is primarily diagnosed in children. It is believed that the disorder effects 10% of children in the United States. Signs of the disorder typically appear early in life, usually in elementary school. Common symptoms include trouble with focus and concentration, difficulties staying organized, hyperactivity, restlessness, and irritability. Many children continue to struggle with ADHD as they become adults and throughout their life.

Living with ADHD

Multiple faces portrait of man.

Life with ADHD can feel chaotic. You may feel like you can never get anything done. You will be focused on one thing, and the next second you find yourself completely distracted. You are not doing this on purpose, you want to stay organized and complete the things you need to do. It is just easy for you to become preoccupied and overwhelmed to the point of forgetfulness. You may feel strong guilt, shame, and insecurity around your disorder, which makes it even harder for you to concentrate.

ADHD can make it difficult for you to excel at school or at work. Sitting and working for longer periods of time can feel next to impossible. It can also impact your relationships and can make listening to others or waiting patiently very hard. It is very common for those with ADHD to forget their commitments and responsibilities.

Therapy for ADHD

It is a common misunderstanding that ADHD can only be treated with medications. While it is true that many individuals find stimulants to help with their concentration, a combination of medications and psychotherapy is the most effective way to treat ADHD. At Oasis Therapy Center, I help those with ADHD in learning and implementing skills to help with organization, concentration, and planning through therapy. Please note I do not offer medication services at this time.

Simultaneously, we also target the symptoms of ADHD that are holding you back from succeeding. Having ADHD may mean you have a lot of emotions related to your abilities and self-worth. We spend time to process these emotions as we navigate a path forward.
